Damaged and repairable vehicles
Salvage My Car in Hampshire & West Sussex
Damaged, written off or no longer running? Do not assume the only option is a weight-only scrap price. A complete car can still have value in its parts, drivetrain, panels, electronics or repair potential.
ScrapTrak buys salvage vehicles directly across Hampshire and West Sussex. Start with the registration and postcode, describe the condition honestly and let us assess the whole vehicle before deciding whether the right route is repair, parts reuse or authorised recycling.
- Accident-damaged and insurance write-off vehicles
- Cat N and Cat S cars considered

The quick answer
Could your car be worth more as salvage than scrap?
A salvage vehicle still has useful value beyond its raw metal weight. It may be repairable, suitable as a donor car or valuable for reusable components. That extra potential is why a proper salvage assessment can beat a basic scrap offer.
One serious but contained problem
A complete car with accident damage, engine failure, gearbox trouble or an expensive MOT fault may still have useful parts or repair potential.
End-of-life throughout
Severe structural corrosion, extensive fire damage, heavy stripping or several terminal faults can leave recycling as the sensible route.
Repair, salvage and scrap
When the answer is not obvious, compare the garage estimate with a ScrapTrak quote before spending more or accepting a weight-only offer.
Vehicles considered
What can you sell to ScrapTrak as salvage?
The car does not need to run or look tidy. What matters is what remains usable, whether there is a sensible repair or parts route and what is needed to collect it safely.
Accident damage
Front, rear, side, suspension and airbag damage, whether an insurance category applies or not.
Non-runners
Engine failure, gearbox faults, electrical problems, snapped belts and cars that will not start.
MOT failures
Complete cars where one expensive repair or a long defect list no longer makes sense to the owner.
Cat N and Cat S
Repairable insurance write-offs, subject to ownership, condition and category checks.
Engine and gearbox faults
Seized engines, timing failure, overheating, clutch faults and automatic or manual transmission trouble.
Unfinished projects
Cars left part-dismantled, abandoned mid-repair or no longer practical to complete.
Electric and hybrid
Battery and high-voltage damage assessed individually with safe recovery planning.
Vans and commercials
Damaged, faulty and non-running light commercial vehicles with repair or parts potential.

The right value depends on what can still be used
Two cars with similar weight can be worth very different amounts. A heavily corroded end-of-life car may be valued mainly for recyclable material, while a newer damaged car can have repair or parts value.
Usually closer to scrap
Severe corrosion, extensive fire or flood damage, missing major components, long-term neglect or a vehicle with little parts demand.
May suit salvage
Repairable accident damage, engine or gearbox failure on a desirable model, Cat N or Cat S damage, or a complete vehicle with reusable panels and components.

How we look at salvage value
Make, model and age
Parts demand and repair viability vary widely between models.
Type of damage
Front, rear, side, structural and mechanical damage all change what can be reused.
Vehicle completeness
Missing wheels, catalytic converters, batteries, panels or interior parts can reduce the offer.
Keys and security
Keys make moving and assessing the vehicle easier, although no-key cars can still be considered.
Paperwork and history
The V5C, write-off information and repair history help us understand the vehicle properly.
Storage and access
A clear driveway is simpler than an underground car park, blocked yard or vehicle without rolling wheels.
Do not strip the car before asking for a quote. Removing the catalytic converter, wheels, battery, engine, gearbox or saleable parts can reduce the complete-vehicle offer and make collection harder.
Insurance write-offs
Cat N, Cat S and vehicles beyond repair
Category N vehicles have non-structural damage and Category S vehicles have structural damage. Both can return to the road if repaired to a roadworthy standard. Category A vehicles must be crushed, while a Category B body shell must be crushed even though some parts may be salvaged.
If an insurer has written the car off, tell us the category and whether you have retained the vehicle. It affects the paperwork and what can legally happen next.
Important: do not describe a write-off category from memory if you are not sure. Check the insurer’s paperwork and send us the exact category.
Before agreeing a sale
Make sure you still own the vehicle and can release it
If an insurer has settled a total-loss claim, check whether it has taken ownership or sold the salvage back to you. Do not arrange an independent sale unless the vehicle has been formally released to you.
The same principle applies to outstanding finance, company vehicles, deceased estates and cars handled for somebody else. The person booking collection must have authority to sell.
If the car is at a bodyshop or recovery yard, confirm who can authorise release and whether storage or release charges remain outstanding.
Useful checks before booking
- Who is the registered keeper?
- Who legally owns the vehicle?
- Has the insurer released the salvage?
- Is there outstanding finance?
- Does a third-party site need written authority?
- Is there a private registration to retain first?

What photographs and details should you send?
You do not need a polished advert. A short, honest set of pictures can answer the questions that otherwise hold up a salvage quote.
Protect the V5C document reference number. Do not send a full photograph of the logbook or expose its reference number in an ordinary message. We can confirm the paperwork needed without asking you to share that sensitive number casually.
Collection arrangements
Homes, garages, bodyshops and recovery yards
Salvage cars are often stored away from the owner’s home. We can plan collection from a garage, bodyshop or recovery yard as long as the site is expecting us and the vehicle is ready for release.
Send the damage details
Include photos, write-off information, keys and any parts that have already been removed.
Confirm the storage site
Give us the contact name, opening times, access and any charges that must be settled.
Agree collection and payment
We confirm the vehicle, collect it and pay by bank transfer after checks.
Have photos of the damage ready?

Repair, salvage or scrap?
Best when the fault is contained
Repair can make sense when the car has been reliable, the diagnosis is firm and the cost is comfortably below the price of a dependable replacement.
Best when useful value remains
Salvage suits damaged or faulty cars with repair potential, reusable components or strong model demand, without the owner taking on the repair risk.
Best at genuine end of life
Scrap is the likely route when the vehicle is badly corroded, depleted, contaminated, extensively damaged or worth mainly its recoverable materials.

Paperwork depends on what happens to the vehicle
A completely scrapped vehicle and a salvage vehicle that may be repaired do not use identical paperwork. We will explain the handover route based on the car and the agreed purchase.
Retain a private registration before selling or scrapping the car. If the V5C is missing, tell us at quote stage rather than leaving it until collection day.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
What is a salvage car?
A salvage car is a damaged, faulty or written-off vehicle that may still have value for repair, resale or reusable parts. It is not automatically treated as end-of-life scrap.
Is salvage worth more than scrap?
Sometimes. A desirable model with repairable damage, useful components and good parts demand may be worth more than its basic metal value. Severe damage or missing major parts can reduce that advantage.
Do you buy Cat N and Cat S cars?
Yes, they can be considered. Cat N means non-structural damage and Cat S means structural damage. The condition, repair potential, parts demand and collection arrangements all affect the quote.
Can you collect from a bodyshop or recovery yard?
Yes. We will need the site contact, opening hours, release arrangements and information about any storage charges before collection.
What photos should I send?
Useful photos include all four sides, the damaged area, interior, dashboard mileage, engine bay and any missing or loose parts. A short walk-around video can also help.
Do I need keys and a V5C?
Keys and the V5C help, but a missing item does not always rule out a quote. Ownership, identity and access still need to be checked.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?
Only if an eligible vehicle is completely scrapped through an authorised treatment facility. A salvage vehicle that is repaired or sold on does not follow the same Certificate of Destruction route.
Is collection free?
Collection is included in accepted quotes across our covered area. Disclose difficult access, missing wheels, locked steering or unusual storage arrangements before booking.
Is a salvage car always an insurance write-off?
No. Insurance write-offs are common salvage vehicles, but an MOT failure, non-runner, mechanically faulty car or unfinished repair project can also have salvage value without an insurance category.
Can a non-runner be worth more than scrap?
Yes. A complete, reasonably modern or popular vehicle can still have value in its engine, gearbox, panels, electronics, wheels, interior and other components even if it does not run.
Can I sell the car after my insurer has settled?
Only if you still own it or have formally retained the salvage. If the insurer has paid out and taken ownership, you cannot sell the vehicle independently.
Can you collect from a garage, bodyshop or recovery yard?
Usually, yes. We need the full address, site contact, opening times, release authority and details of any storage or release charges before booking.
Can you collect a salvage car without keys?
Often, yes. Tell us whether it is locked, whether the steering lock or electronic parking brake is engaged, whether it rolls and whether all four wheels are fitted.
Can I sell a salvage car without the V5C?
Often, yes, although extra identity and ownership checks may be needed. Tell us before booking and have suitable identification and supporting paperwork ready.
How will I be paid?
ScrapTrak pays by bank transfer after the vehicle, authority to sell and collection details have been checked. The payment record forms part of the handover paper trail.
What can cause the agreed quote to be reviewed?
A quote is based on the vehicle being as described. Undeclared missing parts, substantially different damage, an incorrect model, unresolved ownership or access requiring a different recovery plan can mean the offer needs checking.
