Scrap My Tesla

An unwanted Tesla needs a careful description, from its model and fault messages to access and account arrangements. Send the facts first so collection suitability can be assessed.

  • Individual vehicle assessment
  • Local collection enquiries
  • Clear vehicle details

Start with your registration and collection postcode.

Start with an assessment, not a battery assumption

A Tesla that will not drive may still have several possible routes ahead. There could be a repair investigation, an insurance decision or a sale in its present condition. An online search for scrap value cannot establish which route is appropriate, and the car’s weight does not provide a reliable valuation of its battery or other components.

Tell ScrapTrak the registration, exact model, collection postcode and what has happened. We need to review condition and access before agreeing whether a collection is suitable. An enquiry is not a guarantee that every damaged Tesla, loose battery or dismantled electric vehicle can be accepted.

Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X details

Include the model year, version and mileage if available. Explain whether the car is complete, has collision damage or has been inspected by a repairer. If the version is uncertain, give the information shown in your records rather than guessing from another Tesla with a similar appearance.

Tell us what access is available: key cards, a key fob where applicable, or another authorised means of entry. Do not send account passwords or personal login details. A collection plan needs to work with the actual keys and condition, not depend on sharing your Tesla account with someone else.

Describe faults and warnings clearly

Useful information includes the message displayed, whether the car can be unlocked normally, when it last moved and what a professional inspection found. Distinguish a vehicle that will not charge from one that has a confirmed battery diagnosis. Include photographs of visible damage taken from a safe position, without opening equipment or going underneath the car.

If the car has been involved in a collision, fire or flood, say so at the start. Explain any instructions already given by the insurer, recovery operator or repairer. Do not clear warnings, charge a damaged vehicle or repeatedly attempt to drive it just to improve the enquiry description. Seek appropriate professional advice if the condition is unsafe.

Battery systems and high-voltage components are not owner preparation tasks. Do not remove, dismantle or disconnect them for a quote. The vehicle’s condition and available handling arrangements must be reviewed before a proposed collection is confirmed.

Repair, insurance and sale decisions

Where a repair is being considered, ask for a written scope of work and an explanation of what remains uncertain. Check any relevant warranty or insurance position directly with the provider. Avoid arranging disposal while someone else’s approval or financial interest remains unresolved.

A repairable car, a car awaiting diagnosis and an end-of-life vehicle have different prospects. We can discuss the proposed route after receiving the information. A quoted figure for another Tesla does not determine yours, even if the models share a battery description or registration year.

For an insurance claim, keep the insurer’s classification and instructions available. Explain whether the vehicle is still held at a compound and who is authorised to release it. Do not assume that paying a storage bill or holding the keys gives you authority to sell a vehicle after an insurance settlement.

Preparing a realistic collection description

Tell us whether the Tesla is in a garage, a workshop, a compound or on a drive. Mention low ceilings, barriers, tight turns, a slope and anything blocking the approach. Identify any known restriction involving wheels, steering, brakes or movement. “It has power” is not the same as “it can be moved safely”.

Recovery arrangements need to suit the exact vehicle and fault. Do not choose a towing method from an unrelated model or force controls to make it roll. If the car cannot be accessed normally, say so before booking. Our non-runner collection guide explains the practical details that help the team assess access.

Charging equipment and items included in the sale

List any portable charging cable or other accessories you intend to include, and distinguish them from equipment that will remain at the property. A wall-mounted home charger is not automatically part of a vehicle sale. Make the agreement explicit so neither party assumes an item is included when it is not.

Do not detach installed charging equipment or attempt electrical work for a collection. Remove only your ordinary personal belongings where it is safe to do so. Include the boot, front storage area and interior compartments in that check, and keep documents containing personal information separate from the vehicle records being handed over.

Tesla account changes are a separate handover task

Tesla explains how to add or remove a vehicle in its official app ownership guidance. Follow the instructions applicable to your situation and coordinate the timing with the agreed handover. If the app or vehicle cannot be accessed, contact Tesla support rather than sharing your credentials.

An app change does not replace the legal sale record or DVLA notification. Likewise, handing over a key card does not by itself remove saved personal information or every service linked to the vehicle. Keep a checklist of the car, your account and separate parking, toll or charging accounts so each is dealt with through the relevant provider.

Vehicle records and the scrapping route

Have the V5C available and explain early if it is missing. DVLA’s sale and transfer service includes what to do when no log book is available. Keep the buyer’s identity, date, vehicle registration and payment record, and notify your insurer separately.

If the vehicle is completely scrapped, the work must follow the authorised treatment route. GOV.UK explains ATFs and Certificates of Destruction, including the distinction between a vehicle completely scrapped and one repaired for resale. Do not treat every collection as proof that a destruction certificate will follow.

Tesla enquiry questions

Can you value the battery from the model name?

No. A model description is not a battery condition report. Send any available inspection findings, and do not assume that online component prices equal a whole-vehicle offer.

Can I enquire if I cannot open the car?

Yes, but explain that restriction immediately. It affects assessment and collection planning; acceptance cannot be assumed.

Should I remove the vehicle from my app now?

Follow Tesla’s current instructions and coordinate with the agreed handover. Resolve account-access problems with Tesla. Never share your login to make a collection easier.
