Quick answers

The big questions, answered fast

How do I get a quote?

Use the quote form with your reg and postcode. Photos and honest condition notes help us quote accurately.

Is collection free?

Yes. Free collection is included across our Hampshire and West Sussex coverage areas.

How do I get paid?

ScrapTrak pays by bank transfer after the vehicle and details are verified at collection.

Do I need the V5C?

The V5C logbook is best, but we can advise what to do if it is missing.

Prices & quotes

Prices & quotes

How do I get a scrap car quote from ScrapTrak?

Enter your vehicle registration and collection postcode in the quote form, then tell us the vehicle condition honestly. We use the vehicle details, local collection route, access notes and current scrap or salvage value to give you a clear price.

Is the quote free?

Yes. ScrapTrak quotes are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. The quote form simply helps us understand the vehicle and collection location so we can give a sensible local price.

What affects my scrap car price?

The biggest factors are vehicle weight, completeness, whether key parts are still fitted, current scrap metal values, whether the car has salvage value, and how easy it is to collect. Missing catalytic converters, missing wheels, locked brakes or poor access can affect the offer.

Does the price include collection?

Yes. Free collection is included across our covered Hampshire and West Sussex areas. If there is an unusual access issue, such as an underground car park, a multi-storey car park, a blocked vehicle or a storage compound, tell us before booking so we can plan the job properly.

Will the price change when you arrive?

Our aim is to keep the price agreed, based on the information you give us. The price may need to be reviewed if a major detail is different on collection, such as the vehicle being a different model, key parts being removed, no access being available or the condition being very different to described.

Can ScrapTrak beat another scrap car quote?

Often, yes. Send us the competing quote, vehicle registration, postcode and a few clear photos. If the other offer is like-for-like and the vehicle details are accurate, we will tell you honestly whether we can improve it.

Why do scrap car prices change?

Scrap car prices move with metal markets, vehicle demand, parts value, fuel costs and local collection logistics. A complete heavy vehicle will usually be worth more than a small car with missing parts, but the live quote is always the best way to check.

Does mileage or service history matter when scrapping a car?

For a pure scrap vehicle, mileage and service history usually matter less than weight and completeness. If the vehicle is repairable or has salvage value, mileage, history and condition can help the offer.

Is my car too good to scrap?

Possibly. Some damaged, MOT-failed or non-running cars are better sold as salvage rather than fully scrapped. Tell us the honest condition and we will point you towards the route that makes the most sense.

Can I get a quote without the registration number?

Yes, but a registration number helps us quote faster and more accurately. Without it, we will need the make, model, age, fuel type, body style and collection postcode.

Collection day & logistics

Collection day & logistics

Do you collect scrap cars for free?

Yes. ScrapTrak includes free collection across the areas we cover. We collect from homes, workplaces, garages, residential roads, storage yards and safe roadside locations.

How quickly can you collect my car?

Collection is often available quickly in busy local areas, subject to route availability and access. When you request a quote, we will confirm the earliest realistic collection slot for your postcode.

Do I need to bring the car to you?

No. ScrapTrak is built around local collection. We collect the vehicle rather than asking you to arrange delivery or recovery yourself.

Can you collect a non-runner?

Yes. Non-runners are routine. Tell us whether the car rolls, steers and brakes, and whether it has flat tyres, seized brakes, no keys, no battery power or awkward access.

Can you collect a car with no keys?

Yes, in many cases. A no-keys collection needs extra planning because the steering may be locked and the vehicle may not come out of park. Send photos and access details so we can arrange the right recovery method.

Can you collect from a garage or storage compound?

Yes. We can collect from garages, MOT stations, repair shops, storage yards and compounds, as long as the person in control of the site allows access and the paperwork/ownership checks are sorted.

Do I need to be there when the car is collected?

Ideally, yes. It makes ID checks, keys, paperwork and payment much simpler. If you cannot be present, speak to us first because we may be able to work with a nominated adult after prior verification.

Can you collect from a narrow street or permit parking area?

Usually, yes. Narrow streets, one-way roads, permit bays and tight estates are common across Portsmouth, Southampton and older town centres. Photos of the road, parking position and vehicle access help us plan safely.

Can you collect from a multi-storey or underground car park?

Often, yes, but we need the height limit, level, bay number, ramp layout and whether the vehicle starts, rolls or has keys. Some car parks need a smaller recovery setup or extra preparation.

Can you collect if the car has flat tyres or seized brakes?

Yes, but tell us in advance. Flat tyres, locked brakes and vehicles that do not roll can still be collected, but they need the right equipment and enough space to load safely.

Can you collect from the roadside?

Yes, if the location is safe and legal for loading. We cannot load in unsafe traffic positions, live lanes or places where recovery would put people at risk. If the vehicle is in a dangerous location, contact your breakdown provider or the police as appropriate.

How long does collection take?

A simple collection can be quick once the recovery vehicle arrives, but loading can take longer if the car does not roll, has no keys, is blocked in or is in a tight car park.

Documents, V5C, DVLA & Certificate of Destruction

Documents, V5C, DVLA & Certificate of Destruction

What documents do I need to scrap my car?

It is best to have photo ID, proof of address, bank details for payment and the V5C logbook if available. The V5C is helpful because it makes the DVLA process cleaner, but speak to us if it is missing.

Do I need the V5C logbook to scrap my car?

A V5C is strongly recommended, but it is not always the only way to prove you are entitled to dispose of the vehicle. If the logbook is missing, we will explain what checks and details are needed before collection.

What if I have lost my V5C?

You can still ask for a quote. We will need extra details to verify the vehicle and ownership. You should also follow DVLA guidance for notifying them correctly if the vehicle is scrapped without the logbook.

What do I do with the V5C when the vehicle is scrapped?

If the vehicle is being scrapped through the ATF process, the usual GOV.UK guidance is to give the V5C to the ATF but keep the relevant yellow section or reference details, then tell DVLA the vehicle has gone to an ATF.

Do I have to tell DVLA when my car is scrapped?

Yes. You must tell DVLA when the vehicle has been taken to an Authorised Treatment Facility. GOV.UK says you can be fined if DVLA is not told.

What is a Certificate of Destruction?

A Certificate of Destruction, often called a CoD, is proof that an eligible vehicle has been completely scrapped by an Authorised Treatment Facility. It protects you from being linked to future tax, penalties or offences after the vehicle is destroyed.

Will I always receive a Certificate of Destruction?

You should receive a CoD where the vehicle is completely scrapped through the ATF process and is an eligible vehicle type, such as a car or light van. If a vehicle is repaired and sold instead, a CoD is not issued.

Can I keep my private number plate before scrapping?

Yes, but you must apply to take the registration number off the vehicle before it is scrapped. Do this before collection because once the car has been destroyed it can be too late to retain the plate.

Can I scrap a SORN vehicle?

Yes. SORN vehicles are commonly collected from driveways, garages and private land. If the vehicle is on a public road, it must be taxed and insured unless it is being dealt with under the correct legal arrangements.

Can I scrap a car that is not in my name?

Sometimes, but you need permission and evidence that you are allowed to dispose of it. We may ask for written authority from the registered keeper or owner, ID and proof of address.

Can I scrap a car with outstanding finance?

You should not scrap a vehicle with outstanding finance unless the finance company has confirmed you are allowed to dispose of it. Check with the lender first so you do not create a legal or financial problem.

Can you help with DVLA paperwork?

Yes. ScrapTrak guides you through the steps, but the registered keeper remains responsible for making sure DVLA is correctly notified and that any confirmation is kept for their records.

Payment, ID & security

Payment, ID & security

How do I get paid for my scrap car?

ScrapTrak pays by bank transfer after the vehicle and ownership details have been checked at collection.

Can I be paid cash for my scrap car?

No. In England and Wales, GOV.UK says it is illegal to be paid in cash if your vehicle is scrapped. Payment must be by bank transfer or cheque. ScrapTrak uses bank transfer.

When will the money arrive?

Bank transfers are normally fast, but exact bank processing times can vary. The aim is to pay promptly on collection once the vehicle has been verified.

Why do you need photo ID and proof of address?

Scrap metal rules require proper identity checks. This protects genuine owners, helps prevent fraud and creates a clear record of the transaction.

Do I need to give bank details?

Yes, if you want to be paid by bank transfer. We only need the details required to send payment, not your banking login details or PINs.

Are there hidden fees?

No. Your quote should include collection in the areas we cover. If there is a special access issue or the vehicle is significantly different from the description, we will discuss it clearly before proceeding.

Will I get a receipt or confirmation?

Yes, you should keep payment confirmation, collection details, DVLA confirmation and any Certificate of Destruction where applicable.

What should I watch out for when choosing a scrap car buyer?

Be wary of vague prices, cash offers for a scrapped vehicle, no ID checks, no clear business details, pressure tactics or anyone unwilling to explain the DVLA process.

Vehicle condition & types

Vehicle condition & types

Do you buy MOT failures?

Yes. MOT failures are one of the most common reasons people contact ScrapTrak. We collect cars that are uneconomical to repair, unsafe to drive or simply not worth putting through another test.

Do you buy accident damaged cars?

Yes. We buy accident damaged cars, including vehicles with body damage, suspension damage, airbag deployment, engine damage or insurance write-off history.

Do you buy Cat N and Cat S cars?

Yes. Cat N and Cat S vehicles may have salvage value depending on age, damage, mileage and repair potential. Tell us the write-off category and send photos if possible.

Do you collect Cat A or Cat B vehicles?

Potentially, but these categories have strict restrictions. Cat A vehicles must be crushed and Cat B vehicles cannot return to the road, though some parts may be removed by authorised professionals. Tell us the category before booking.

Can you collect an electric or hybrid car?

Yes, but EVs and hybrids need extra care because of high-voltage systems. Tell us if the vehicle is electric or hybrid, whether it has accident damage and whether there are battery warnings.

Can you scrap a van?

Yes. ScrapTrak collects light vans and commercial vehicles. The price can depend on weight, condition, access, whether it is complete and whether it has salvage value.

Can you collect a car with missing parts?

Usually, yes. Missing parts can reduce the price, especially catalytic converters, alloy wheels, batteries, engines, gearboxes or body panels. Tell us what has been removed before we quote.

Can you collect a car without wheels?

Sometimes, but it needs extra planning and may affect the price. Send photos of the vehicle position, surface and access so we can decide the safest way to load it.

Can you collect fire or flood damaged vehicles?

Yes, subject to safety and access checks. Tell us the type of damage, where the car is stored, whether it rolls and whether it has been inspected by an insurer or garage.

Can you collect an abandoned vehicle?

Only if you have the legal right to dispose of it. If a car has been abandoned on public land, report it to the local council. If it is on private land, ownership and authority need to be clear before removal.

Can I remove parts before scrapping my car?

You can remove parts if you own the vehicle and do so safely, but removing valuable or essential parts may reduce the price and can make collection harder. Do not drain fluids or remove parts in a way that causes pollution.

Do you buy cars with no MOT, tax or insurance?

Yes, provided the collection can be carried out legally and safely. A vehicle without MOT, tax or insurance should not be driven on the road, so collection is usually the best route.

Insurance, tax, SORN & after collection

Insurance, tax, SORN & after collection

When should I cancel my insurance?

Cancel or transfer your insurance after the vehicle has been collected and you have confirmation. If you cancel before collection, do not drive the car on the road.

Will I get a road tax refund?

DVLA normally refunds remaining full months of vehicle tax after the vehicle is correctly notified as sold, transferred or scrapped. Keep your DVLA confirmation for your records.

Do I need to remove personal belongings?

Yes. Check the glovebox, boot, under seats, door pockets, phone mounts, dash cams, toll tags, parking permits, number plate documents and any garage paperwork before collection.

What should I do with parking permits or congestion accounts?

Cancel or update any parking permits, workplace permits, automatic payment accounts, toll accounts and clean air zone accounts linked to the vehicle registration.

What happens after the vehicle is collected?

The vehicle is taken into the appropriate recycling or salvage route. If it is completely scrapped through the ATF process, the ATF handles depollution and the Certificate of Destruction where applicable.

Should I keep any paperwork?

Yes. Keep payment confirmation, DVLA confirmation, collection details and any Certificate of Destruction. It is worth keeping them together in case a tax, insurance or penalty query arrives later.
