Insurance Write-Off: Confirm These Details Before Selling the Car
Before arranging a separate sale of a written-off car, confirm who owns it, whether you have agreed to retain it and whether it can be released. A quote can help you consider your options, but it does not settle those questions for you.
Start with the insurer’s decision
Ask for the claim decision and any recorded write-off category in writing. Keep this with the vehicle registration, claim reference and settlement correspondence. If the decision is still pending, describe it as pending when making an enquiry.
The insurer decides whether the vehicle is a write-off. Categories A and B have destruction requirements; categories N and S can be repaired, but must be roadworthy before returning to use. The GOV.UK write-off guide explains the categories and the different steps for keeping a vehicle. Do not choose a category yourself from the visible damage.
Confirm ownership before promising a collection
The Financial Ombudsman Service explains that the insurer usually owns the salvage once the owner accepts payment of the full market value. If you want to keep it, make that clear before agreeing the settlement or letting disposal arrangements proceed.
Ask the insurer to confirm the position in your particular claim. Having the keys, having the car on your driveway or being able to obtain a quote should not be treated as permission to sell it.
If finance, a lease, a company owner or another person’s ownership is involved, identify whose agreement is needed. Get that resolved before offering the car to an independent buyer. Where the arrangements are disputed, pause the sale while the relevant parties clarify them.
Keep the settlement and salvage offer separate
A salvage offer is for the damaged vehicle in its present condition. It is a different figure from the insurance settlement. The Ombudsman’s guidance discusses cases where keeping the salvage involves a deduction from the insurer’s payment; it is not automatically an extra payment on top of keeping the entire settlement.
Before deciding, ask for a written breakdown covering:
- The settlement offered and whether you have already accepted it.
- Whether retaining the car has been agreed, and any deduction involved.
- Who will own the vehicle once those arrangements are completed.
- Whether the insurer has already booked recovery or disposal.
- Any unresolved garage or storage arrangements that could affect release.
Keep each quote with its date and conditions. Do not add together figures from different options unless the insurer has confirmed that those options can actually be combined.
Check the release arrangements where the car is stored
Contact the garage, recovery yard or other person holding the vehicle. Ask who can authorise release, which reference a collection team would need and whether a particular appointment is required. If charges are being discussed, ask for the amount, period and responsible party to be confirmed rather than assuming a buyer will cover them.
Tell the insurer about a proposed independent collection before cancelling or replacing an existing arrangement. Keep the car available for any inspection they still require. Our garage collection checklist helps organise the practical handover once permission is clear.
Agree the documents and describe the condition honestly
Follow the official write-off process for the V5C and DVLA notification; the instructions differ when retaining category N or S vehicles. If you want to keep a private registration, address that before disposal. Check the relevant section of the GOV.UK guide linked above instead of assuming the usual private-sale paperwork applies.
For a separate sale enquiry, provide the registration, location, confirmed category and known damage. Include available inspection findings and say what remains unknown. Share clear vehicle photos where it is safe to do so; there is no need to start or move a damaged car to demonstrate its condition.
Once ownership and release are agreed, you can request a vehicle quote with those details. Tell the team about any remaining claim conditions before confirming a collection.
