A practical way to move an unwanted Audi on
There is a point where an unwanted car stops being transport and starts occupying space, time and attention. Your Audi may be waiting for a repair decision, sitting at a bodyshop or parked at home after being replaced. A clear offer and a workable handover plan help you decide what happens next.
Begin with a quote for your Audi. Give the registration, collection postcode and condition, including faults that may not be visible in a photograph. If it still runs, tell us that too. Searching for a scrap buyer does not mean you must describe a repairable vehicle as beyond use.
Describe your Audi beyond the badge
A1 and A3
For an A1 or A3, useful details include the year, mileage, fuel type and transmission. Tell us whether it has failed an MOT, has a confirmed mechanical fault or is simply unwanted. If a garage has given an estimate, explain whether the price is based on a completed diagnosis or more investigation is still needed.
Photographs should show the general condition as well as any damage. A close-up of one broken component will not tell us whether the rest of the car is complete or how it can be reached.
A4, A5, A6 and other larger cars
Body style matters when describing an Audi. Say whether it is a saloon, Avant, Sportback, coupé or convertible where applicable. Mention damage to the load area, roof or doors, and explain if the car has been dismantled. Service records and repair invoices can help describe its history without replacing an honest account of its current condition.
Q models and all-wheel-drive versions
For a Q model, include the exact model and any access constraints. If the car is a quattro version, mention it; if you are unsure, do not guess. Vehicle specification can affect recovery planning, so a generic towing suggestion is not a substitute for checking the actual Audi.
Electric and plug-in hybrid Audis
Explain the exact model and power system at the start of your enquiry. Include charging faults, warnings and any accident damage you know about. Do not assume that similar badges mean identical batteries, drivetrains or recovery instructions. Collection suitability needs checking before a booking, particularly where high-voltage components may be damaged.
What to do with an expensive repair estimate
Ask the repairer to separate the confirmed work from possible additional work. You need to know whether the estimate solves the problem or only pays for the next stage of investigation. Also consider other work already due, such as MOT repairs, tyres or damage you have been postponing.
The comparison is between realistic options for your car today. Its original retail price is no longer the relevant figure, and an optimistic advert for a clean running example does not show what a buyer would pay for yours as it stands.
If the work is manageable and you still want the Audi, repairing it may be sensible. If it has useful repair or parts potential but you do not want to organise the work, an as-is sale or salvage assessment may fit. If it is beyond practical use, scrapping may be the right route. Read our salvage guide for more on that distinction.
Accident damage and incomplete cars
If your Audi has been involved in an accident, describe both visible damage and anything a repairer has identified. Tell us about airbags that have deployed, damaged wheels or suspension, leaks and whether doors open. Do not move an unsafe vehicle to improve the photographs.
If an insurer is involved, establish who controls the vehicle and whether it is available for you to sell before agreeing collection. A salvage category is useful information, but it does not replace the current condition description. Follow the insurer’s instructions and the government guidance on insurance write-offs.
For a car that is partway through repair, list components removed or missing. Explain whether loose parts are included and whether the Audi is on its wheels. “Complete apart from a few bits” is difficult to plan around; a short, accurate list avoids unnecessary surprises.
How an Audi quote is assessed
We need enough information to consider both the vehicle and the collection. The registration identifies the starting point; the condition, completeness and location help make the enquiry useful. Include:
- Model, year, mileage and fuel type.
- Known mechanical or electrical faults and any written diagnosis.
- Accident damage and missing parts.
- Whether the engine starts and whether the car can move, roll and steer.
- Available keys, parking position and collection postcode.
A scrap assessment considers the vehicle being recycled; a salvage assessment also considers possible reuse or repair. Offers can therefore differ for cars that look similar in a registration search. Our value guide explains the main factors without promising a fixed figure for every model.
If you remove components, move the car to a different address or discover further damage after the enquiry, update the details before booking. An accurate offer depends on the vehicle being accurately described.
Loading an Audi that cannot be driven
Tell us if the car is stuck in park, the parking brake will not release or the steering cannot turn. Flat tyres and a damaged wheel can matter just as much as the engine problem. We need to know whether the vehicle can be reached safely and what equipment may be required.
Audi’s official owner resources provide access to the manual for your car. Do not force controls or use release instructions for a different model. The collection plan should account for the drivetrain and condition, especially after accident damage.
Share photographs of the access route. A car behind a low barrier, in an underground space or at the far end of a narrow drive needs advance planning. If it is at a bodyshop or garage, agree who will release it and provide keys. The booking should be confirmed with the actual access arrangements in place.
Prepare the documents and clear your information
Have the V5C and keys ready where available. Tell us beforehand if the log book is missing or you are handling the sale for another person. Remove belongings, parking permits and any accessories you are keeping after agreeing what is included in the sale.
If the systems are accessible, clear saved personal destinations and paired devices using the owner’s instructions. Check connected account arrangements through Audi rather than handing over personal login details. Keep the collection confirmation and transaction record somewhere you can find them later.
Notify DVLA when the Audi is sold or transferred. The official guidance explains the process, including the route without a V5C. Complete any private registration retention before disposal. A Certificate of Destruction is relevant to complete scrapping, rather than every sale of a damaged car.
Audi scrap and salvage questions
Can an Audi with engine damage still have value?
It needs an individual assessment. The model, overall condition, completeness and possible repair or parts use all matter. Give the diagnosis you have rather than assuming the engine fault decides everything.
Can you quote for an automatic Audi that will not select neutral?
Make an enquiry and explain the problem clearly. Loading requirements and access need checking before collection is agreed. Do not force the selector or improvise a release procedure.
Should I repair the bodywork first?
Request an assessment before spending money solely to sell the car. Clear photos and an honest damage description let us consider it as it stands.
What if I cannot access the infotainment screen?
Do not attempt repairs just to clear it. Tell us about the issue, remove belongings you can reach safely, and ask Audi about any personal connected account you need to unlink.
