Selling a Volkswagen when repairs no longer add up

A car can be useful for years and still reach a point where the next repair is difficult to justify. That decision is personal: how much you use it, the work it needs and whether you already have another vehicle all matter. A Volkswagen badge does not provide a fixed answer, and neither does one headline scrap price.

ScrapTrak considers unwanted, damaged and non-running cars. Tell us whether you want to clear space, avoid further repair spending or move a vehicle away from a workshop. Start a Volkswagen quote with the registration and collection postcode, then describe the condition as clearly as you can.

Golf, Polo, Passat and the detail behind the model name

Golf and Polo

For a Golf or Polo, give the year, fuel type, mileage and transmission where known. Include the actual fault rather than only saying it is “old” or “broken”. If it still starts but will not move, say so. If an MOT repair list is the reason for selling, keep the result and any written estimate to hand.

Different generations and versions can have different repair potential. Do not compare your non-runner directly with the asking price of a roadworthy example advertised online. The cost, uncertainty and effort of returning it to use have to be considered.

Passat, Touran and larger family vehicles

An estate or people carrier needs a complete description of the body and interior as well as its engine. Tell us about damage to the rear doors, tailgate or load area, and whether seats or other original parts have been removed. Before collection, check storage compartments carefully for personal possessions.

Tiguan, Touareg and other SUVs

For a larger Volkswagen, access can be as important as the mechanical fault. Give us photographs showing where it sits and the route out. Tell us the drivetrain if you know it, but do not guess from the appearance of the car. The recovery plan must match the actual specification and condition.

Electric and hybrid Volkswagens

Tell us explicitly if your vehicle is electric or hybrid, including an ID. model, e-Golf or a plug-in version. Explain any charging problem, collision damage or warning information you have been given. Do not treat a battery-related warning as a confirmed diagnosis, and do not attempt to dismantle high-voltage components to prepare the car for sale.

A gearbox description is more useful than a label

“Gearbox problem” can mean the car will not select a gear, it loses drive, it behaves differently when warm, or a garage has identified a specific component. Those are useful distinctions. If you have a diagnostic report, provide the relevant information. If you do not, describe the symptoms and say that the cause is unconfirmed.

Some owners know a Volkswagen transmission by a particular marketing name; others simply know it is automatic. Either is fine as a starting point. Do not assume every automatic Volkswagen has the same gearbox or that one model’s release and recovery instructions apply to another.

We do not need you to road-test an unsafe car or reproduce a fault. What you already know, supported by photographs and any workshop report, is enough to start a sensible discussion.

Is repair, salvage or scrap the right route?

If a repair is still on the table, compare the whole proposal. What work is included, what remains uncertain and what else is due soon? A lower initial estimate can grow if the garage has not yet completed its diagnosis. Ask questions before deciding whether to spend more.

A complete Volkswagen with useful components or realistic repair potential may be suitable for a salvage assessment. A vehicle that is beyond practical use may instead be recycled. Requesting a quote does not commit you to either route, and the word “scrap” in a search should not prevent you explaining that the car still runs.

If you suspect an outstanding safety recall is relevant, check through the official vehicle recall service and ask the manufacturer about the result. A known recall and a general repair problem are separate questions. Do not assume an unrelated owner’s experience describes your car.

What changes the value of a Volkswagen?

For recycling, the vehicle’s material value and completeness are relevant. For a repairable car, the model, specification, condition and likely repair work also influence the assessment. A heavily damaged Golf cannot be valued solely from a price advertised for an undamaged Golf of the same year.

The most helpful quote information is practical:

  • Registration, model, mileage and fuel type.
  • Known faults and any professional diagnosis.
  • Whether it starts, drives, rolls and steers.
  • Damage and missing components, including anything removed by a workshop.
  • Keys available, collection postcode and access restrictions.

Tell us if you are still considering removing parts. Taking components off can change the offer and collection arrangements. If another repair attempt or a change of parking location affects the car after quoting, update us before confirming the appointment.

Planning collection without guesswork

A Volkswagen can be impossible to drive but straightforward to access, or mechanically sound yet trapped behind a gate or height restriction. Explain both the car and its surroundings. Mention underground parking, a narrow shared entrance, steep ground, a locked steering wheel or tyres that have gone flat while it has been standing.

For equipment and operating information, Volkswagen provides an official owner manual service. Use information matched to your vehicle rather than an online instruction for a different generation. Do not force a transmission selector or release brakes where the car could roll.

If the car is at a garage, agree who can provide the keys and authorise release. Make sure the vehicle is not blocked by other work when collection is due. Share a contact who will be available, and wait for the confirmed booking before changing your own plans.

Paperwork, personal information and handover

Keep the V5C and keys ready if you have them. If the V5C is missing or the car belongs to someone else, tell us early so the necessary checks can be explained. Take your possessions out and remove saved personal information from accessible infotainment or connected accounts using the relevant instructions.

Retain the collection record and ensure DVLA is notified that you no longer own the vehicle. The official notification guidance also covers a sale without a log book. A car destined for complete scrapping must be handled through an authorised treatment facility; repairable vehicle sales do not automatically result in a Certificate of Destruction.

Volkswagen scrap car questions

Can I get a quote for a Golf with an automatic gearbox fault?

Yes. Give the symptoms and any diagnosis, and explain whether it can roll for loading. The overall vehicle needs assessment; a gearbox fault alone does not settle whether it should be repaired, salvaged or scrapped.

What if my Volkswagen has been standing for months?

Tell us how long it has been parked and what you know about the battery, brakes and tyres. Do not assume it will move simply because it drove into the space. Clear photographs help us assess the collection.

Can you quote for an ID. or another electric Volkswagen?

Send the exact model, condition and any battery or collision information. Suitability and handling must be checked individually before a booking is made. Do not remove the traction battery yourself.

Do I have to accept the first offer?

No. Read what the offer is based on and ask about anything unclear. Make your decision using the actual car, confirmed collection arrangements and the paperwork involved.

Ready to move your Volkswagen on?

See our collection locations and collection process, or read the broader scrap my car guide. When you are ready, request a Volkswagen quote and tell us what needs sorting.
