Should You Replace a Lost Car Key Before Selling for Scrap?

Ask for the vehicle to be assessed without keys before paying for a replacement. Then find out what a working replacement would actually change. The useful comparison is the confirmed sale arrangement after any extra costs, not an assumed increase in the car’s value.

Establish exactly what is missing

Check whether a spare is held by another authorised driver, a garage or the person who last used the vehicle. Distinguish a completely missing key from a key or fob that is present but no longer responds. Explain what it last did successfully rather than diagnosing a battery, lock or immobiliser fault.

If only part of a key remains, describe that too. A door key, remote fob and locking wheel-nut key are different items; saying “I have a key” may leave the buyer with the wrong impression. Do not force a damaged key or attempt to bypass the vehicle’s security to demonstrate that it works.

Get an assessment of the car as it stands

Give the registration, collection postcode and current key situation before agreeing an offer or visit. Say whether you can access the cabin and whether the car’s present running condition is known. If it ran before the keys disappeared, give that date; do not describe it as tested and running now.

ScrapTrak’s car collection without keys page explains the information needed to assess access. Use that route to ask what is possible for your vehicle, rather than assuming that a replacement is a condition of every collection.

Keep a record of the offer, its conditions and what the buyer understood about the keys. If the enquiry form does not capture an important detail, explain it to the team before confirming the booking.

Ask what a replacement would change

Before ordering anything, ask the buyer a specific question: would a usable replacement affect the offer, the collection arrangements, both or neither? Ask what “usable” means for that assessment. Do they need access to the cabin, or would they need the correct key available for a professional inspection?

A replacement key would not itself prove that the engine, gearbox or other systems work. Keep any existing faults and inspection limits in the description. Do not spend money based on a hoped-for price for a running car when that condition has not been established.

Ask which parts of any revised offer can be confirmed now and which depend on inspection. The quote comparison guide helps you record the price, collection terms and payment arrangements together.

Obtain the complete replacement quote

Contact the vehicle manufacturer’s dealer or an appropriate professional key provider with the exact model and circumstances. Ask for the complete proposed work, rather than comparing the advertised cost of a key blank with an offer for a working replacement.

For example, Ford’s replacement-key guidance requires identification and ownership documentation, says costs vary, and notes that the vehicle may need transporting to a dealer. That is Ford’s process; confirm the requirements for your own make and model.

Before agreeing the work, clarify:

  • Whether the price includes the key, cutting, programming and any visit.
  • Whether the vehicle must be taken elsewhere and who arranges that.
  • What is payable if another fault prevents the expected result.
  • When the work can be completed and whether that affects your collection booking.

Compare those confirmed costs and conditions with the two sale options. If the buyer cannot yet confirm a different offer, treat the possible increase as uncertain.

Keep authority and the final handover separate

A new key does not resolve a question about your authority to sell. The Department for Transport also makes clear that a V5C is not proof of ownership. Ask which identity and ownership or authority records the buyer needs, using our documents guide to prepare.

If belongings or documents are locked inside, tell the team before collection and agree how they will be retrieved safely. Do not assume you will be able to recover them later. If a spare turns up or replacement work is completed, update the buyer so the final agreement reflects the actual keys, condition and access available.
